Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?
According to psychology, human development enters a new stage roughly every seven years. The transition is continuous, of course, but about every seven years the personality renews itself.
Why does this matter?KLND started seven years ago, in 2019, as Bikepacking Hungary. Since then it has become KLND and grown into an identity of its own. It has core pillars, shared values and shared memories. It has had experiments, successes and failures. From the very beginning, KLND's personality has been shaped by a community, and like any personality, people see it in many different ways. One thing, however, has always been its defining quality: being a community. This is what we now want to put front and center.
Seven years, 37 events
We started gravel and bikepacking events in Hungary, and by autumn 2026 we had organized 37 events. 24 of them were single-day gravel events, including 3 National Championships and 11 Hungarian Cup rounds. The KLND Gravel Series ran every year for five years, starting in 2022.
Now another renewal is coming, or more precisely, a shift in focus: KLND is closing the Gravel Race Series.
This was not an easy decision. Gravel, as a discipline and as a way of life, is written into our DNA. But we see it as a spectrum that runs from racing all the way to the coffee brewed next to the tent. So the new goal is not really a new direction at all. It amplifies what was already there at our foundations: gravel, bikepacking and Hungary.
We know events matter to the community, so of course they are not going away.
As a result of the change, there will be more KLND events in 2027 than ever before, just in a different form. What disappears is the one day gravel racing. What arrives is even closer to where KLND originally started. It is no coincidence that KLND's two flagship events are the Hungarian Divide and Tour Horizont.
Hungarian Divide
The Hungarian Divide is a 1,400-kilometre, self-supported, off-road ultra-bikepacking event. Every year it starts with more riders, it has produced its own legends and become the biggest celebration of Hungarian adventure cycling. It is now also recognized by international entrants, international event calendars and the international press. We are very proud of this!
Tour Horizont
With Tour Horizont, we established the community-based, multi-day adventure tour format in Hungary in one go. In its very first year it brought so much joy to so many people that we have every reason to keep nurturing it.
These events are the KLND personality traits that are not being replaced. In fact, they will keep evolving!
The resources we have spent on race events so far will be redirected to strengthening the community, advocacy and education, because we believe this community is now capable of more than running individual events. We are adjusting how we operate accordingly and resetting our compass.
Trail development and stewardship
Advocacy for off-road cycling in nature, or as it is known in English, trail organization, is a concept that is hard to capture in a single good Hungarian term. What needs to be done for it is much clearer.
After seven years and with nearly 400 members, KLND is ready to actively work for the forests and to be the voice of off-road cycling in Hungary. The voice of athletes, group riders, cycle tourists and everyone who explores the forest by bike in their free time.
Together with our active members, event participants and followers, we represent a community that spends a huge amount of time out on the trails. We are the ones who see and experience what it is like out there in every season and at every hour. It matters what kind of environment we ride in, how safe we are, and how we can coexist with the forest, its wildlife, its managers and other forest users. As we see it, KLND is currently the only organization in Hungary able and willing to take this issue on in a meaningful way. Let's work together to keep a place for us in the forest!
What will the KLND community focus on from next year?
Opening up new trails.
With the help of our nationwide membership, we will map, legalize and maintain routes that currently cannot be used at all, or only with restrictions.
There are many forest roads that off-road cyclists use regularly and safely, yet by law they are not open to bicycles. KLND wants to resolve this situation not only as a community, but as an advocacy body.
Based on members' usage data, these routes are identified. KLND then works with forestry authorities, landowners and the relevant organizations to propose their legalization and, once permission is granted, marks and maintains them together with its members.
KLND Atlasz.
KLND has strength and know-how. As a community, we are able to solve any issue we believe can be solved by working together, without institutionalization, bureaucratic overhead or “overgrowth”.
Through its club members, this community is already capable, in its current form, of identifying problems, finding answers to them, and representing outdoor recreation (cycling and beyond), its growth and its sustainability from the grassroots up.
That is why every two months the KLND Club launches a new community theme that members explore, discuss and work through together. Each theme comes with routes, group rides and Discord conversations, and at the end of the cycle we publish a summary in the newsletter and on the KLND blog.
Education.
We see it as our responsibility to educate outdoor enthusiasts, and especially the fast-growing gravel cycling crowd. That is why at the end of 2026 KLND is launching its education branch, which supports safe, responsible and sustainable off-road cycling.
We are open: you can join us as an individual, as a team or as an organization.
A separate announcement about the trainings is coming.
Community life.
We are a grassroots organization, and our strength comes from the community. We always involve members in reaching our shared goals, build a truly community-driven way of working, and create regular opportunities to meet. We organize club meetups, tours, group rides and KLND Camp weekends across the country.
The club is open to everyone, from beginners and returning riders to experienced ones.
There are reasons behind the numbers
To support the new direction, today we are launching our 2027 membership campaign. Our goal is to grow: from the current 396 paying members to 700 by the end of 2027, and to 1,000 in 2028.
This is not megalomania. A larger membership also means greater advocacy power. When we negotiate with forestry, authorities or other organizations, it matters how many cyclists we are speaking for. More riders have a louder voice.
“We have been organizing events since 2019, and along the way a community was born. From 2027, this community also wants to represent everyone who explores nature by bike, in front of forestry authorities and decision-makers.”
– said Marcell Gangel, founder of KLND, responsible for the club and the community.

KLND Club members can continue to take part in the work: they can contribute data through the annual survey, volunteer for trail marking and maintenance, join the KLND Atlasz themes, and organize group rides in their own area.
We want everyone to treat our shared causes as shared work. KLND and its community have grown up. They know their needs and their limits, and they know that they are the ones best placed to stand up for the former and to change the latter.
If it matters to you to have places to ride, now you can do something about it!

To set new directions, we had to take stock of our story so far. Where do we come from, who are we and where are we going? We believe KLND is an open and welcoming community for everyone, one of the defining organizations of the Hungarian gravel and bikepacking scene, full of drive and ambition.
Now we want to use this community and the knowledge built up over seven years to go beyond events and help make off-road cycling in nature accessible, safe and sustainable for as many people in Hungary as possible.
